History

On October 3, 1919, a handful of men gathered in Cape Town to give tangible effect to a vision which would have far reaching impacts on the lives of every person in South Africa. It was on this day that African Products Manufacturing Company Limited as Tongaat Hulett Starch was then known was registered as a public company with a nominal capital of £50 000.

The vision that led to this move was to establish a locally based starch and corn flour manufacturing mill which would enable South Africa to effectively compete in its own market and eventually further afield against strong competition from overseas suppliers. The long term vision was to see South Africa manufacturing its own glucose and other essential products from the nation’s maize resource.

Once registered the company moved fast, land was leased and eventually purchased in Georgetown East, Germiston. The building of the factory began in 1920 and a plant was erected. The official production of starch and corn flour commenced in mid 1921, and the production rate took off initially producing about 100 tons of starch and corn flour a month.

It is a tribute to those early pioneers that when the company took its products to the Witwatersrand Agricultural Society Annual Show in 1923, the products were judged to be of such a high standard that they were awarded a Gold Medal of Quality – high praise indeed for a company which had only been manufacturing for two years.

Since those formative years, Tongaat Hulett Starch has traced a path of growth and technical development which has seen it rise to a position where today it can hold its own against the world’s leading manufacturers. More importantly, however, is that Tongaat Hulett Starch is a vital contributor to the South African economy supplying products to a wide and diverse range of industries such as food, beverage, pharmaceutical, textile, paper converting, paper making, adhesives and spray drying.

Our products manufactured at our five South African facilities are essential ingredients in the manufacture of thousands of products, used by hundreds of different companies, in as many industries.

Our world class milling facilities are located in Kliprivier, Germiston and Meyerton – in Gauteng, and in Bellville – in the Western Cape. Our dedicated Sorbitol facility is located in Chloorkop, also in Gauteng.

In supplying a diverse range of products, to an equally diverse range of clients and industries, we have a lasting and far-reaching impact on the lives of millions of consumers across the African continent and around the world. Tongaat Hulett Starch is Africa’s premier producer of starch and glucose and we touch lives.
